Reach Ahead Courses

These courses are offered to students in grade eight wishing to accelerate their studies by taking up to three grade nine high school courses before graduation from elementary school.

Grade 7 Literacy

Students will participate in critical thinking, problem solving, innovation, and design exercises.  In this course, students are further taught the fundamentals of reading, oral and written communication.  Teachers will instruct students in the development of written compositions with strategies to improve written products.

Grade 7 Numeracy

Understanding of rational numbers to one billion and Math facts are reinforced.  Students will further work with fractions, decimals, and percentage calculations.  Patterns in numbers are also addressed.  Data analysis and probability are addressed through course activities.  Mathematical formulas for spatial sense and geometric properties will be presented.  Students will perform simple financial calculations such as comparing exchange rates.

Grade 7 Science

The curriculum involves topics such as pure substances and mixtures, structures and mechanisms, heat in the environment, and interactions in the environment.  By engaging students with these “big ideas” and using knowledge building principles, teachers will encourage students to delve deeply into these topics.

Grade 7 History and Geography

This course is comprised of both the Geography and History components.  Students will be introduced to historic events leading to the creation of New France during the 1700’s, the Seven Years’ War, and other developments leading to the Constitution Act of 1791.

The second half of the course is an introduction to mapping skills, landforms, characteristics of water systems, and climate regions.  The second strand focuses on natural resources and the effects of resource extraction.

Grade 8 Literacy

Students will further participate in critical thinking, problem solving, innovation, and design exercises.  Digital citizenship, on-line safety, and research or information literacy are reinforced.  In this course, students will reinforce the fundamentals of reading, oral and written communication.  Teachers will further instruct students in the development of written products, editing, and word processing.

Grade 8 Numeracy

Students will be taught to perform calculations using integers and fractions.  Proportional reasoning is reinforced.  Students will identify and compare number patterns, algebraic expressions and equations.  They will also use algebraic equations to solve for unknown values.  Teachers will instruct students on the collection, organization, and analysis of data for problem solving.  Geometric reasoning exercises will involve the identification of patterns in tessellations, creating models using appropriate scales, and perform transformations using translations, dilations, rotations, and reflections on a Cartesian plane.  Students will also solve problems involving calculations for length, area, and the volume of various two and three-dimensional shapes.  Teachers will introduce students to simple financial management and consumer awareness.

Grade 8 Science

This curriculum includes topics such as fluids, systems in action, water systems, and cells.

By engaging students with these “big ideas” and using knowledge building principles, teachers will encourage students to delve deeply into these topics.

Grade 8 History or Geography

This course is comprised of both the Geography and History components.

Students will review how Canada has changed before and after the enactment of the British North America Act of 1867.  Teachers will introduce students to the patterns in human settlement, geographic inequalities, economic systems, and factors for economic development.
